My Journey

Sharlene E. Edwards, MPH, RN, CIC

Hi, I’m Sharlene aka Nurse Shar.  Here's a little more about me and my journey to My Better Living.

I have been a public health practitioner and community health advocate for over 18 years. I have a master’s degree in public health epidemiology  with experience in communicable diseases. I've spent most of my career working with vulnerable populations to reduce the burden of disease in their communities including Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Tuberculosis.

In 2015, I became a registered nurse and that’s when my perspective on community health truly changed.  Shortly after becoming a registered nurse, I worked with older adults for some time and got firsthand experience into how a life time of poor habits and choices can take a toll on the body and lessen the quality of life.  At the same time, I faced devastating news that while not yet in my 40’s, I had become a borderline diabetic, which if I continued in this direction, I would follow the path of many family members before me; tied to a life of needle sticks and insulin shots.

After years of failed diets and weight-loss attempts, I finally decided to change my lifestyle once and for all and adopt a plant-based lifestyle which ultimately changed my life.  What started out at a 30-day challenge has turned into 3 years of learning, growing, and success.

Weight-loss isn’t easy, neither is reversing years of poor habits, but you must start somewhere.  I’ve discovered a need to build a community of health and wellness for those looking to incorporate real changes in their life while accepting the imperfections of the journey.

My Better Living was created out of my passion for motivating people to better health, better wellness, and better living. If you are a real person, looking for real change, then I’m looking forward to working with you.
